1-800-Got-Junk is playing a radio ad about the weird things its team members haul. The 2017 list is here. The eclectic selections include a large statue of Gentleman Jack of Jack Daniels lineage, TV personality memorabilia, and a small boat. The ad amuses and frustrates me. Yes, the stuff is sometimes unconventional. But in context, every one of those items had meaning once. They were once quite possibly cherished. Out of context, each of them is devalued. I wish the junk-hauling companies would overnight start referring to themselves as “stuff-haulers.” It’s easier to let go of stuff, harder to let people even see your junk. Sometimes letting go is brave.

And there’s a forgotten context to what’s “let go.” What’s gained. Space. What’s found – often more control over your environment and your time. Sometimes a string of pearls.

So my gratitude to 1-800-Got-Junk and all the other awesome stuff-haulers like Sasquatch Junk Removal, the JDog Junk Removal franchisees and AD Hauling Solutions.  Keep finding the weird.
